Sixteenth centuary Madrid was a quiet and peaceful farming community near to the Sierra de Guadarrama. In the city’s ancient past the Muslims built a fort called Magerit on a rise over the Rio Manzanares just South of the current site of the royal palace. The fort was actually captured by Christians in 1083 but the two religions managed to co exist in relative peace, being somewhat distant from the politics of the larger Castilian cities.
